Akai originated in the summer of 1929. It was then that a young man named Mazukichi Akai founded a small company producing cartridges for electric lamps. This company was family owned. Its rapid development, as well as the majority of other Japanese firms, falls on 1945. But the defeat of Japan in the war could not but affect the situation of business. The accounts of many enterprises were frozen. Mazukichi Akai fell into a deep depression and lost all interest in running the company.

The enterprise was revived by his son Saburo Akai. He was able to persuade the country's largest bank Mitsubishi to unlock his account. With the money received, Saburo rented a small factory called KAMATA. Mazukichi Akai became the director of the new company, and his son was promoted to executive director.

The young company has faced many difficulties. It lacked working hands, the owners literally saved on everything, but hard work over time could bring its positive results. Already in 1946, the first engine was launched in one horsepower. A year later, an electric motor was developed, designed for an electric player with a stabilization system and control of the disk rotation speed. In the 51st year, an electric motor with a low noise level and a variable speed of rotation appeared. Three years later, Akai released the first tape recorder.

Saburo Akai became president of the company in 1958. Then the first model of a stereo tape recorder was released, and Akai took a strong position in the domestic Japanese market. One of the most significant merits of the company is the development of the principle of cross magnetization of the tape during recording. This provides excellent frequency response while reducing tape speed. This principle was first introduced on four-track tape recorders in the 59th year.

In 1969, another innovation was introduced in world sound recording. Akai has developed a glass-ferrite head called CX HEAD. In it, the core was made of crystalline ferrite. In 1979, the first cassette decks appeared, and then the company created audio heads with a double separator gap for playback and recording.

Among the first, Akai began development in the field of video. In 1965, for the sake of this, they even created a special department, and a few years later they released the first VCR. In 1971, the first color video camera saw the light.

Saburo Akai passed away in 1973 at the age of 57. Then the president of the company was Minokichi Saito. Seven years later, the Mitsubishi Group, the main shareholder of Akai, put Tadatsu Waki at the head of the company, thanks to which production was rebuilt and expanded. In 1984, the first synthesizer and tape recorder were released.

Further, the company developed in close collaboration with the Mitsubishi Group. In 1985, Akai stopped producing tape recorders in Japan. Production was completely transferred to France and Taiwan. Then the new name of the company "A&D" appeared. In the 90s, the company experienced very serious financial difficulties, and the Mitsubishi Group put it up for sale. Billionaire Jame Thing, head of the Semi Tech Global Group, bought it.
